Red Kite Animations were asked by the CCG/BBC on behalf of S4C and the Children's Television Trust International, to create a short animation film for children (aged 5-8).This 12 minute short film 'Loch Ness Kelpie' was directed by Iain Gardner, co-written by Iain Gardner and Angus Peter Campbell and produced by Mary Morrison.
Ewan is a young boy who is keen to provide for his family in the absence of his father. Despite his mother's warnings, he goes fishing on Loch Ness, which she maintains is haunted by an evil water spirit. Ewan encounters a beautiful black horse, which in turn transforms into the fantastical and dangerous Kelpie, intent on dragging Ewan to the bottom of the loch. Ewan manages to outwit the beast and gain control of its magic bridle, which renders it helpless. In the dramatic finale, where Ewan is chased home by the Kelpie, he is finally helped by his mother and the protective charms of the Rowan tree.
